"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. "
- Harry Truman
It wasn’t until last year that I learned I really never had a clue what directing was. I used to think a director needed to have all the answers. I used to believe that it was up to me to talk to everyone and tell them what to do. What I never processed was the fact that everyone else in the room is a creator as well. If I tell them what to do, then I am essentially cutting them off at the knees and telling them that their idea isn’t good enough. This is a medium that isn’t about being right. It can’t be. It’s about being valued and being heard. If you ever talk to an artist that says their voice doesn’t need to be heard, then that artist is lying to you.
So my philosophy as a director is this -- Surround myself with a team of people that are smarter and more talented than me. Listen to what inspires them and the vision they have for the piece. Take everyone’s separate vision and find a way to mold them all together. The greatest lesson of my artistic life has been this: when in collaboration, leave your ego out of it. The best ideas are just around the corner when multiple minds meet in humility to solve a problem.
I am constantly looking for collaborators. I love meeting new actors, directors, designers, producers, and writers. If you’re a writer and you have a script, I’d love to see it and talk about potentially hosting a table read.
